About Herne Bay Electrician

We are a New Zealand owned and operated electrical business, working across Auckland since 2009 with a team of registered electricians. The work is both residential and commercial, from a single faulty socket in a villa hallway to the wiring of a whole renovation or a shop fit-out. Most of our jobs are in West and Central Auckland, which puts Herne Bay, with Westmere, Ponsonby and St Marys Bay around it, in the middle of the area we cover most, and we travel to the rest of the city, North Shore included. We are not based in Herne Bay; we serve it. Get in touch with the team about your job.

Why choose Herne Bay Electrician

Many Herne Bay houses come from the villa boom that ran from the 1890s to the 1910s, when, in the words of Auckland Council's own character statement, suburbs like Herne Bay "exploded with a boom of house building in the villa style". A house of that age has often been renovated more than once, and its wiring tends to be a mix of decades. So the first thing we do on any job is find out what is really in the walls, the ceiling and the switchboard, and only then talk about what needs doing.

Parts of the suburb also sit inside the Special Character Areas Overlay of the Auckland Unitary Plan, which lists "Isthmus B - Herne Bay" and asks for maintenance and repair over loss of original fabric, with new materials that suit a building's age and detailing. We plan cable routes, fittings and outdoor equipment with that in mind, so the outside of the house changes as little as possible.

Questions about hiring an electrician in Herne Bay

Are you based in Herne Bay?

No. We are an Auckland electrical business that serves Herne Bay and the suburbs around it, including Westmere, Ponsonby, St Marys Bay, Grey Lynn, Freemans Bay and Point Chevalier. We work right across Auckland, North Shore included, so if you also own a property elsewhere in the city, the same team can look after it.

How can I check an electrician is licensed?

WorkSafe's advice is to ask to see the electrician's practising licence and check its expiry date; the colour of the card changes every two years. Our electricians are registered, and you are welcome to ask any of them to show you theirs before work starts.

What paperwork should I get when the job is finished?

For fixed wiring work, such as a new power point, a new circuit or a rewire, you should receive a Certificate of Compliance. Simple maintenance, like swapping a worn socket or a light fitting for the same thing, does not get one. Keep the certificates with your house papers, because insurers and buyers can ask to see them.

Does electrical work on a character villa need council approval?

Most electrical work happens inside the house and is not a planning matter. In the special character overlay, the Unitary Plan permits restoration and repair, but treats external alterations and additions as restricted discretionary activities that need a resource consent. If a job would put something new on the outside, such as a heat pump unit on a street-facing wall, it is worth checking with Auckland Council first, and we will help you look for a less visible spot.

Our power is off. Should we call you or Vector?

Look out of the window first. If the neighbours are dark too, it is most likely a network outage: check Vector's outage information for your address and report it there. If only your house has lost power, or it keeps going off, call us on 021 156 4005 and an electrician will find the cause.
